ASH WEDNESDAY IS A PERFORMANCE PIECE
PERFORMED ON THE RELIGIOUS CATHOLIC DAY ASH WEDNESDAY OF 2020
WRITING THE WORDS : MY MOTHER'S GRIEF ON MY FOREHEAD INSTEAD OF PLACING THE ASHES I GREW PLACING EVERY YEAR ON MY FOREHEAD
"yesterday, for ash Wednesday i had the words MY MOTHER’S GRIEF written on my forehead. I did not carry the ashes i had grown up placing on my body. instead i carried my mother’s grief.
held it. felt it. recognized it. experienced it.
sustained something that was not mine inside only to have a sense of separation,
and overlapping time. a sense that i am still processing.
i wore these words during the day, as i worked a seven hour shift, expecting someone to ask about the words on my forehead. no one did. some customers carried a strangeness to their face, curiosity and others (maybe) a sense of discomfort. and there was this shift of power occurring for me. i was not uncomfortable" -2020
